Two people, including a police officer, were injured late Sunday when a miles-long police chase ended in a crash on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
At about 11:30 p.m., officers witnessed a Toyota sedan driving erratically near the intersection of Grand and Harlem before the driver of the sedan began firing shots toward the officers, authorities said.
The shooting sparked what would become a more than 7-mile police chase that lasted several minutes before the driver lost control of his vehicle and hit a pole at a gas station near Ashland and Fullerton avenues.
“Before I even knew it, all these cops were surrounding the area,” one witness said. “Everyone around the fence were just gathered around and cops had their guns drawn to try and get the guy out.”
The driver was taken into custody and transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
An officer was also injured at the scene and was treated and released from an area hospital, according to authorities.
An investigation remained ongoing Monday morning and charges were pending.
