Bail Denied for Man Charged in Infant's Death

Antoine Watkins, 21, was charged with murder after a 13-month-old boy was killed by a car fleeing a fatal shooting

A judge did not grant bail for a man charged with murder after a car fleeing a fatal shooting struck and killed a 13-month-old boy on Saturday.

Antoine Watkins, 21, of the 8100 block of South Bennett Avenue, appeared in court Monday. The hearing was forced to stop when the mother of Dillan Harris, the 13-month-old boy, broke down in tears and began to scream.

The next hearing for Watkins is scheduled for July 23.

Watkins was charged with one felony count of murder, a misdemeanor count of attempting to elude police and a citation for driving without insurance following the fatal crash.

Police say Watkins was seen in a vehicle that matched the description of the one that fled the scene of a fatal shooting in the 7700 block of South Kingston Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

Following the fatal shooting, the vehicle crashed into a group of people at the intersection of 63rd and Ellis, striking Dillan, who was with his mother, police said. On Monday, Watkins admitted he was the driver of the car that killed the infant.

The boy was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The prosecutor said Watkins was on probation at the time of the shooting and had a previous felony and misdemeanor charge. He also said Watkins was likely driving 60 to 70 mph in a 35-mph zone.

A Chicago rapper known as Capo, who was a member of Chief Keef's "Glo Gang," was killed in the fatal shooting in Woodlawn, according to his manager.
