Navy Shooting Suspect Graduated From Great Lakes

Aaron Alexis suspected of mass shooting at Washington Navy Yard

The suspect in a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard that left at least 13 people dead Monday is a former Navy officer who completed part of his training in Illinois.

Aaron Alexis, 34, graduated from boot camp at Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County as an Airman Recruit in 2007.

Alexis is suspected of shooting several people on the third and fourth floor of the Navy Yard before he was fatally shot by an FBI hostage response team.

Alexis served in the U.S. Navy between May 5, 2007 to January 31, 2011 when he was discharged, a Navy spokeswoman said. Alexis was an "aviation electrician's mate"-- a third class petty officer-- serving at the Naval Air Station in Fort Worth, Texas at the time of his discharge.
