Naperville Man Charged With Stabbing Husband, Wife as They Slept

An 18-year-old man has been charged with breaking into a Naperville home, stealing a large kitchen knife and stabbing a husband and wife as they slept early Tuesday.

Zachary Machnikowski is charged with attempted first-degree murder, home invasion and residential burglary, all felonies, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

About 1:15 a.m., Machnikowski entered the home on Iroquois Avenue, took thea large knife from the kitchen and went upstairs to the bedroom, according to a statement from prosecutors.

He attacked the couple as they were sleeping in their bed, stabbing the husband first and then the wife, prosecutors said. When the husband tried to fight off the attack, Machnikowski ran away.

Officers arrived and found the couple covered in blood in the living room, prosecutors said. Each had been stabbed multiple times in the face, head, hands and abdomen. They were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

Machnikowski, of the 1100 block of Spring Garden in Naperville, was arrested within minutes, according to the statement. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning, where Judge Liam Brennan will consider a request to deny bond.

“At this time, our thoughts are with the victims and their family in getting them through this tragic event,” Naperville Deputy Police Chief Brian Cunningham said in the statement.
