The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement early Saturday, warning of dangerous swimming conditions in northwest Indiana just hours before the Gary Air Show was scheduled to begin.
Life threatening waves and strong rip currents are expected at northwest Indiana beaches, according to the warning. Anyone visiting the beaches is advised to stay out of the water.
Models shows powerful waves reaching between 4 and 7 feet high, creating for potentially life-threatening conditions, NWS reports.
"Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most significant wave and current impacts," the NWS said.
The Gary Air Show, returning after a two-year hiatus, was scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Marquette Park just steps from Lake Michigan.
The show is scheduled to run until 3 p.m., and the park closes at dusk. The show will also run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Saturday evening.
