My Shelter Story: LeeAnn Trotter and Her Rescue Animals

Perhaps you've heard people say their rescue pets seem to "know" they've been rescued. I'm one of those people.

I grew up with dogs, but I had never adopted from a shelter until eight years ago, when I adopted Zoe, a little maltese who was featured on NBC 5's Adopt-a-Pet segment. Since then, I have adopted five more dogs and a cat, all older animals that are generally passed over. And every single one of them, once they finally realized they are in a good place surrounded by good people, you could look into their eyes and feel the gratitude. Unconditional love to the max! It's the best thing ever.

Right now I have three dogs: Juno, Poppy and Harley. Juno (the brown one) is a shih tzu, I adopted him five and a half years. He was a stray, and when Chicago's Animal Care and Control picked him up off the streets, he looked like a monster. When I first brought him home, he was super afraid of everything and everyone. Now he's outgoing and an absolute joy! Just goes to show you what a little love and a stable home life can do!!!

I adopted Poppy (the poodle mix), & Harley (the yorkie), just over a year ago. They were rescued from "backyard" breeders who could no longer care for their 15 dogs. Harley is a senior dog who is deaf and almost blind. He was emaciated, and looked like he was close to death. Now he's perky, plump and happy! His buddy Poppy is being treated for extreme anxiety. There were several times I didn't think she was going to work out,  but thanks to medication and a little patience, she is a completely different dog. I'm happy to report she is much improved!!

Over the years, I've dealt with some challenging situations with my rescues. But, I've also experienced extraordinary moments, which far outweigh the bad. It's my small way of saving a few lives. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
