Local soul queen Mavis Staples won best Americana album for “You Are Not Alone,” for which Staples collaborated with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
“You haven’t seen the last with me," Staples said during an emotional acceptance speech. "God is not through with me yet.”
The Chicago Symphony and Chorus also picked up awards, one for best classical album and one for best choral performance for the Riccardo Muti-led recording of Verdi's "Requiem."
The awards were the first for Staples and for Muti, who remained hospitalized Friday so doctors could install a pacemaker.
The 69-year-old Muti suffered jaw and facial fractures when he fell from the podium Feb. 3. His appearances with the CSO have since been cut short and other conductors have filled in for him.
