Land surveyors in northwestern Indiana have discovered mummified human remains that could be 2,000 years old.
The Munster Times reports a team of archaeologists found the remains Friday on the site of a planned quarry southeast of Lowell, or about 20 miles south of Gary.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich says the archaeologists told him the remains could be 500 to 2,000 years old. He says the archaeologists will investigate further to see if the site was a Native American burial ground. He says the surveyors could make out a head and a torso.
Lake County Coroner Merilee Frey says the investigation now is being handled by state archaeologists in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
