At Least 3 Dead, Multiple Shot in Chicago's Southwest Side

Multiple people were shot on the Southwest Side of Chicago early Sunday morning, according to police.

Officials said two incidents occurred within four hours apart from each other at the same block of 1300 West Hastings St. in the ABLA Homes public housing community.

The first incident took place at 1:33 a.m. where two people were shot and one of them succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed.

"A review of police and security cameras show several hundred people were gathered prior to this incident," CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi later said in a statement.

Prior to that incident, authorities confirmed that "officers had been to the housing development numerous times throughout the night to disperse large crowds that were gathered for the Memorial Day weekend."

The second shooting took place at 6:02 a.m. and two individuals were fatally shot, while two other victims were taken to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

"At this time detectives are exploring a possible tie between these two incidents," Guglielmi said.

Four people of interest were being questioned in connection to the shootings, Guglielmi added, and multiple weapons were recovered from the scene.

"Detectives believe our offender opened fire on a group of people with a TEC-9 semi-automatic machine pistol," Guglielmi stated.

No other information was immediately known.
