Multiple Cars Set on Fire Overnight in West Lawn

Investigators determined that an accelerant was used to start the fires

Multiple cars caught fire early Thursday morning on the city’s Southwest Side in an incident investigators believe was intentional.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., the Chicago Fire Department reported to 63rd and Kildare in Chicago’s West Lawn neighborhood, according to officials. They discovered three vehicles, a red Chevy, a dark colored SUV, and a black Ford Explorer, on fire.

"It was totally engulfed in flames,” said neighbor Gary Biel.

The red Chevy and dark colored SUV were parked in an alley behind an apartment building. The two vehicles belonged to the same owner, according to officials. The black Ford Explorer was parked along Kildare.

Investigators determined that an accelerant was used to start the fires.

"This is shocking to see I've never seen anything like this," Cynthia Garcia, who works in the neighborhood, said.

The fires caused some minor damage to buildings and also burned vehicles parked nearby. No one was injured.

"Three cars burned and they don't know who did it, who knows maybe someone else might be next tonight," Biel said.

Investigators say the fires may be gang-related. Chicago police’s arson unit is investigating.
