Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Part of Indiana Interstate

The southbound lanes are still closed as of 4 p.m. Tuesday

A multiple-vehicle crash shut down part of an Indiana interstate in Lowell, Ind. for several hours Tuesday.

Indiana State Police were called to the scene in the southbound lanes of I-65 at about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. A truck pulling a flatbed trailer was allegedly driving too fast on the slippery roads when it struck another semi that had slowed down for traffic, according to police.

The driver, Juan Castaneda, 47, of Chicago, started a chain reaction of crashes when he struck the semi. In total, five trucks and a van were involved in the crash.

Two people were inside the van, which was crushed between two semis. They were transported to Jasper County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck that caused the accident, Juan Castaneda, 45, of Chicago, was cited for failing to reduce his speed to avoid a collision.

The roadway was allegedly covered in black ice and wind was blowing snow across the interstate when the accident occurred, police said. Prior to this crash, several vehicles had slid off the roadway and traffic had slowed.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were all reopened as of 4:15 p.m.
