Mrs. Illinois Giving up Crown

Garcia called pageant officials to ask if they wanted the crown and sash returned

Christine Garcia, winner of Mrs. Illinois International 2012, reportedly is giving back her crown.

Why? Because she's no longer a Mrs., according to the Sun-Times' Michael Sneed. Garcia is in the process of divorcing from her husband John Garcia, a local TV news reporter.

Sneed says Garcia even called pageant officials to ask if they wanted her to return the crown and sash.

The couple recently confirmed the divorce, according to the publication, but Garcia asked that media respect their privacy. She said stepping down as pageant winner was "the right thing to do" because Mrs. Illinois acknowledges accomplishments of married women.

John Garcia said the couple is working on their marriage.
