Mom Turns Son In After Recognizing Surveillance Photo

Teen arrested at parents' home in connection with car break-ins

A Northwest Indiana mom made what had to be an agonizing decision this week.

The mother of 18-year-old Zachary Bell recognized her son in surveillance photos published in the NWI Times Wednesday morning. Police had released the photos looking for a suspect in a string of thefts from unlocked vehicles Sunday morning in St. John, Ind.

After seeing the photos, Bell's mother called police and the teen was arrested at his parents' home Wednesday afternoon.

Bell is accused of taking cash, credit and gift cards and a .45 caliber handgun in the thefts. Police say the surveillance photo was taken at a Speedway gas station where the suspect was using one of the stolen cards.

Formal charges are expected within the next 48 hours, according to police.
