Mom, Nursing Student Fatally Shot While Riding in Car in Chicago

Police believe the shooter was on foot and may have been targeting someone else

Young mother Daysha Wright was fatally shot while riding in a car just blocks from Chicago’s United Center Wednesday, becoming one of nearly 20 people shot in the city in a matter of hours.

Wright, a 22-year-old nursing student and the mother of a 2-year-old boy, was a passenger in a car in the 2100 block of West Maypole Avenue when someone on the street started shooting and she was hit in the back.

“She was not a bad person,” said her cousin Tamara Chapman. “She was just trying to find a way to take care of her baby.”

The car Wright was in is still parked at the scene Wednesday, the bullet path apparent, through the back of the car to the passenger seat. Just steps away, mourners could be seen paying their respects at a growing makeshift memorial.

“She’s young, she’s 22,” said relative Tatiana Wright. “You know, I really don’t understand none of this right.”

Family members said Wright lived in Michigan, but was in Chicago to visit relatives.

“What am I going to tell her son,” said Tatiana Wright. “How am I going to explain it to him?”

Police believe the shooter was on foot and may have been targeting someone else. The driver of the car Wright was in was not harmed.

Mourners gathered Wednesday night for a vigil to remember the young mother.

"I'm upset right now because I got to help my family bury my cousin," Chapman said. "I thought we were supposed to bury our parents. The parents aren't supposed to be burying, they're not supposed to be burying no kids. That's not right. It's just not right."
