21-Year-Old from Illinois Dies in Afghan War

Adam E. Dobereiner killed in IED explosion

A soldier from western Illinois died last week after an attack in Afghanistan, authorities announced Sunday.

Pfc. Adam E. Dobereiner, 21, of Moline, died Friday at Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Sunday.

Dobereiner was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade from Fort Hood, Texas, the Department of Defense said.

According to the 8th Engineer Battalion’s Facebook page, Dobereiner was killed Friday in the Arghandab Valley in southern Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device struck the vehicle in which he was riding. The attack also injured two other "teammates."

The Illinois National Guard said it is providing military support to the Dobereiner family.
