Missing Girl, 9, Taken by Mother in Northwest Suburbs: Authorities

Police were searching for a 9-year-old child Friday who they believe was abducted by her mother in the northwest suburbs.

Kayla Unbehaun was taken by her 35-year-old mother Heather Unbehaun July 4, South Elgin police said. They might be traveling in a blue 2000 Toyota Camry with expired Georgia License Plate PTM 3975, according to police.

Kayla’s father went to pick her up in the 500 block of East Illinois Street in Wheaton from Heather. On July 5, but learned Heather had packed her car and left with the child the day before, police said.

“Heather has not had any contact with family since she leaving with Kayla,” police said.

The Kane County state’s attorney’s office, where a family court case is pending, authorized a child abduction charge for Heather.

South Elgin police are asking that if anyone sees the vehicle, Kayla or Heather Unbehaun to dial 911.

Information about the case can also be reported to the Investigations Division of the South Elgin Police Department at 847-741-2151.
