Metra Trains Experience ‘Extensive Delays' Due to Amtrak Computer Glitch

Extensive delays were expected to last through Friday morning for Metra trains entering and leaving Union Station, after an Amtrak computer glitch halted trains for about an hour.

The glitch started tying up Metra trains about 6:30 a.m. on the Milwaukee District-North, North Central Service, BNSF, Milwaukee District-West, SouthWest Service and Heritage Corridor lines, the transit agency said. Metra trains entering and leaving Union Station were halted during the Friday morning rush due to Amtrak “computer signaling problems” on the north and south sides of the station, according to Metra.

The problems were ongoing as of 7:25 a.m., with Amtrak crews “manually lining tracks for trains” to start moving in and out of the station, until the computer system was restored, officials said.

Trains were back on the move by about 7:45 a.m., according to Metra, bu with 42 trains waiting to get in and out of the station as of 8 a.m., serious delays were expected, officials said.

Metra urged riders to listen to platform announcements and monitor its website.
