Starting Friday across the Chicago area, kids will get a healthier option along with their Chicken McNuggets -- apples.

McDonald's is making a change to its Happy Meals, offering apple slices alongside a smaller helping of fries and either 1% white milk or fat-free chocolate milk instead of a soft drink.

You don't have to make the change, though. You can request only fries or only apples and a soft drink instead of milk.

The Oakbrook-based company announced it would make the change earlier this year as part of its "Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices", according to Crain's Chicago Business.

McDonald's has offered the fruit as an alternative option for the past seven years, but only a little more than 10 percent of customers choose to make the change.

The new Happy Meals will be available in all of the company's restaurants by the end of March.
