A man fell nearly 20 feet from an accordion lift, into an underground vault below the sidewalk, when a hatch gave way. He survived Thursday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to a building at 600 W. Chicago, just before 11 a.m.. When they arrived crews found a man, believed to be in his 40s, in the underground vault.
Officials said the space below the sidewalk, which was covered with a hatch, apparently gave way.
The man was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was listed in fair-to-serious condition.
