Bicyclist Killed on Dan Ryan

State police say it was an accident

An investigation continued Monday into why a 28-year-old bicyclist was trying to cross the Dan Ryan Expressway's express lanes on the South Side Sunday night before being fatally struck by an SUV.

Christopher Hippchen, 28, of the 5200 block of North Sheridan Road, was killed.

Hippchen was riding his bike south in the northbound lanes of traffic on the Dan Ryan near 55th Street at 9:10 p.m. when he was struck by an SUV, Illinois State Police Trooper Clare Pfotenhauer said.

He was attempting to cross the expressway when he was struck but it remained unclear Monday afternoon where he was going, she said.

Hippchen worked as a cook at Soldier Field, a friend of his told the Chicago Tribune, but it's unclear if that's where he'd been.  The annual Prep Bowl had been at the stadium earlier in the day.

The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sources said. He was struck by a black Jeep SUV, which had to be towed from the scene.

The driver of the SUV remained on the scene after the crash and no charges are expected to be filed, Pfotenhauer said.

All northbound lanes were reopened as of 12:20 a.m., a state trooper said.

Bicycles are prohibited on expressways.
