A man attacked a woman with a machete after she got into his minivan early Sunday in West Humboldt Park, and Chicago Police say he might be targeting other women engaging in “high-risk activities.”

The woman agreed to get into his vehicle about 2:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Springfield when he attacked her, according to a community alert.

She was able to escape the van, but he chased her and then cut her several times with the machete in the face and body, police said. The woman was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The man then got back into the minivan and drove off. He is described as a Hispanic man ranging in age from his 30s to early 50s, between 5-foot-8 and 6-feet tall with a medium build, black hair and a mustache. He was wearing a white T-shirt with white shorts.

Police said it wasn’t a random act, though the man might be going after other people “who engage in high-risk activities.”
