A man was shot near the Elgin Toll Plaza on I-90 after police chased him for nearly 35 miles.
High-speed car chases never end well, but that thought didn't seem to occur to one Chicago driver until he was shot by police Tuesday night after leading them on a 35-mile car chase.
The pursuit began on the city’s Northwest Side and continued on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) near Illinois Route 31 WBBM reported.
Chicago police were conducting a narcotics investigation and had attempted to stop a vehicle observed in a narcotics transaction about 9 p.m. The Mercedes SUV refused to stop when officers activated their sirens,instead fleeing west on the Kennedy Expressway.
When the officers were finally able to stop the SUV near the Elgin toll plaza, 35 miles later, the man was ordered to exit the vehicle, but instead he struck one of the officers with his SUV.
An officer feared for his safety and another officer's safety, so he shot the suspect in the chest, a release said.
The car crashed into a guardrail near the toll plaza and paramedics found the man inside the vehicle with gunshot wounds.
Investigators recovered drugs they believed belonged to the man, police said.
The suspect, believed to be in his 30’s, is listed in serious condition at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Elgin. Two other police officers were recovering at Sherman Hospital in Elgin with non-life threatening injuries.
The fire department crews left the scene by 10:05 p.m., but the incident closed all outbound lanes for more than two hours.
