Man Gets 21 Years for Newborn Death

A South Side man has been sentenced to 21 years after a fight with his wife sent her 5-week-old baby off a balcony

A South Side man was sentenced Tuesday to 21 years in prison after a fight with his estranged wife that resulted in his wife's 5-week-old son falling from a third-floor porch.

Jason Range, 22, got in a heated argument with his wife in 2009 after she brought two men with her to pick up her children at Range's home, Chicago Sun-Times reports.

According to authorities, Range cut his wife with a knife, choked her and then kicked her in the back as she walked out of the home carrying her son, Jeremiah, unsecured in a car seat.

The final kick from Range caused the car seat to go over the porch railing, giving the baby multiple skull fractures from the fall.

Range was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated domestic battery and battery.
