Man Rescued From Des Plaines River in Schiller Park

A man suspected of breaking into vehicles in suburban Schiller Park was rescued from the Des Plaines River early Thursday morning, police said.

According to Schiller Park Police, there were reports of someone breaking into vehicles around 2:45 a.m. in the northwest suburb but the man took off on foot when police arrived.

About an hour later, the man was seen running into a forest preserve in the area, where he then fell into a culvert near Irving Park and River Roads.

Police said the man was unconscious but a River Grove Police officer jumped in and was able to keep the man above water until officials could rescue them.

The Schiller Park Fire Department ultimately pulled the man out of the water, and, according to police, the suspect was conscious as he was transported to an area hospital Thursday morning.

A stolen vehicle, weapons and stolen items were recovered in the area, police said.
