Man Killed, Trooper Injured in Eisenhower Crash

They were sitting in a squad car when a vehicle rear ended them.

A man trying to stay warm in the back of an Illinois State Police car on the Eisenhower expressway (I-290) was killed and the state trooper injured when another car crashed into it early Saturday.

The trooper was assisting the man with a non-injury traffic accident on eastbound I-290 near Mill Road when another car rear ended it, according to Illinois State Police spokeswoman Maria Navarro.

The man, a 42-year-old Brookfield resident, was sitting in the back of the squad car and died of his injuries, Navarro said.

An Addison Fire Department spokesman said three people were transported to area hospitals. He would not release any additional details early Saturday, citing the police investigation.

Illinois State Police Elgin District Master Sgt. Bart Lamb said the trooper was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with a possible concussion, and the driver of the vehicle that hit his squad car was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with non-life-threatening injuries.
