John Landem was arrested and charged with vehicular hijacking and robbery.

Northbrook Police charged an Elgin Township man with hijacking a minivan and robbing a woman and her children at a shopping center parking lot Saturday.

John Landem,42, faces one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking and one count of robbery in the incident, which happened on Dundee Road in Northbrook.

The woman called 911 reporting that a man had approached her and her children demanding the keys to her minivan. The woman told police her children were in the van at the time, but the hijacker allowed them to get out before taking off and robbing her of $45.

Police say Landem drove south on the Edens expressway and eventually crashed into four vehicles near Peterson Avenue in Chicago.

He was later picked up by Skokie police officers while allegedly trying to carjack another vehicle.
