Man Dies Week After Crash at ‘Extremely Dangerous Intersection' in Elgin

A man died Monday after being injured in a crash at what police called an “extremely dangerous intersection” in Elgin.

Bill Linden, family says, would have celebrated his 65th birthday and 44th wedding anniversary in September. He was a father of four and a grandfather of eight, who married his high school sweetheart.

He was planning to retire, family said.

The crash occurred at Randall Road and Route 72 about 5 a.m. June 12 as he was traveling to work in East Dundee.

Police are investigating the crash, which involved another car, but because Linden’s injuries were not considered life-threatening at the time, there was no accident reconstruction. Alcohol was not considered a factor, police said.

Linden was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where he later died.

The driver in the other car involved in the crash, a 26-year-old man from Carpentersville, was treated at the scene. Both drivers say they believe they had the right of way, police said.

Linden’s family wants answers as to why this accident happened, and police say they are working to provide those answers. They are reviewing body cameras from officers at the scene, as well as the cars involved.

Police also say the intersection has gotten safer over the years after being redone.

The investigation was ongoing Friday night.

Linden was once chairman of Elgin’s zoning board of appeals, according to the Daily Herald.
