Man Dies After Found Trapped in Belmont Harbor

A man dies after crews found him under water in Lake Michigan, according to fire officials

A 55-year-old man is dead after emergency crews found him wedged between rocks underwater in Lake Michigan.

Crews responded around 12:15 a.m. to a call of a man in the water in the Belmont Harbor, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

When crews arrived, divers had to jump in to rescue the man, who was stuck in between rocks about 10 feet underwater, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Fire officials said the man was drinking with some friends before he decided to go for a swim.

The man was pulled out of the water unconscious at around 12:40 a.m. and transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he later died.

The Chicago Tribune reports the man was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Jorge Martinez, of the 1800 block of South Loomis Street.
