Man Charged with DUI After Car Crashes, Catches Fire Near Brookfield Zoo

A 28-year-old man was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed his car into a wooded area not far from Brookfield Zoo early Saturday, according to a release from Riverside police.

About 2:13 a.m., Riverside police received a 911 call about a car that crossed four lanes on First Avenue and crashed into the woods near Wabaunsee Road, the release said. Officers found a 2005 Subaru on fire about 50 feet into the woods, the release said.

The driver, Gonzalo Aguilera, was out of the car and bleeding from his head, the release said.

Aguilera, of the 2700 block of 73rd Avenue in Elmwood Park, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where officers interviewed him and noticed his breath smelled like alcohol, the release said. Aguilera allegedly told officers he had been drinking margaritas and beer and smoking pot, the release said.

After being treated at the hospital, Aguilera was charged with driving under the influence and driving under the influence of drugs. He was also issued several traffic citations.
