Man Charged in Police-Involved Shooting Near New 606 Trail: Police

The shooting happened one block away from the new 606 Trail

A Chicago man has been charged after he allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer, prompting the officer to open fire one block away from the new 606 Trail, which had just opened a day before the shooting.

Investigators said Rafael Corona, 29, pointed a gun at the officer in the 1700 block of North Talman Avenue in Logan Square. The officer fired his gun at Corona, but missed. No one was injured in the shooting.

Corona was arrested on scene and police say a weapon was recovered at the scene.

He was charged with several felonies, including aggravated assault of a peace officer, unlawful use of a weapon and unlaw possession of a firearm by a street gang member.

The 606 Trail officially opened to the public on Saturday. The $95 million trail and park system takes its name from Chicago's ZIP code prefix and travels along a defunct rail line through four neighborhoods.

The 606 has been praised as a potential link between those sometimes disparate neighborhoods and an attraction that can be enjoyed by tens of thousands of Chicago residents.
