Man Charged With DUI After Driving Into Playground

A man was charged with DUI after he allegedly drove an SUV onto an elementary school playground in west suburban Batavia Monday afternoon.

Officers were first called to H.C. Storm School about 3:30 p.m. for a suspicious person in the school’s soccer field, according to a statement from Batavia police. Police arrived near the school’s dismissal time and found Stephen Wake, 65, of Aurora, drinking a bottle of wine.

Police cited him for having open liquor in a public place. He told officers that a friend had dropped him off and he didn’t have a vehicle with him, according to the statement. He also told police he was there to watch soccer practice.

Forty minutes later, police were called back to the school after Wake allegedly drove his Chevy Equinox onto the playground on the south side of the school, the statement said. He then failed field sobriety tests.

He was charged with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the statement. He posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 17.
