Man Charged In Attack on Off-Duty Chicago Police Officer

Incident escalated after motorcyle crash in suburban Maywood

A teen has been charged in connection with a string of events that led to an off-duty Chicago police officer shooting and killing a man who attacked him over the weekend in west suburban Maywood.

John Passley, 18, of Bellwood is charged with one count each of aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated battery on a public way.

Authorities said the incident unfolded Saturday night when an off-duty Chicago police officer was driving his motorcycle in Maywood.  He ditched his bike to avoid striking a 4-year-old girl who ran into the street, the Sun-Times reported. But it ended up striking the girl and Passley, who is her cousin.

Afterwards the girl's father, Christopher Middleton, 26, shouted at the off-duty officer and began beating him, authorities said. Passley allegedly struck the officer as well.

The officer reportedly pulled out his weapon and shot Middleton, who died.

The off-duty officer and the girl are both expected to recover from their injuries.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
