Man Barricades Himself Inside Waukegan Apartment

A Waukegan apartment complex was evacuated Sunday in what appeared to be a barricade situation after a woman said she was attacked by her estranged husband, police said.

Police received a called around 11 a.m. with a report that there was a man with a gun in an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Berwick Boulevard, according to Sergeant Cory Kelly with the Waukegan Police Department.

A woman told police her estranged husband entered her third floor apartment when “a struggle ensued,” Kelly said.

The woman said the man had what she described as a small, black handgun, according to authorities.

Police said a 3-year-old child who was not related to the offender was able to escape during the struggle.

The woman later fled the apartment but the offender chased her, but ran back into the building when police arrived, officials said. The man remained barricaded in the building as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

All tenants in the apartment who were in immediate danger were evacuated, police said.

The woman suffered minor, but visible, injuries, Kelly said.

Police said the man is believed to be wanted on an active warrant.
