Man, 87, Dies While Burning Leaves

Sustained burns to 90 percent of his body when fire raged out of control

An 87-year-old Northwest Indiana man died from burns sustained while trying to incinerate a pile of leaves near his home with gasoline Sunday.

Russell Wing, of 3682 E. State Road 4 near La Porte, was trying to burn the leaves Sunday morning. The fire raged out of control, leaving him with burns to more than 90 percent of his body, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Wing was pronounced dead at a Maywood hospital at 7:52 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
