Coat Drive 2016 FAQ’s

My coat is tattered? Will you still use it? If so, how does that work?

Yes. While coats that are in wearable condition are preferred as donations to the coat drive, The Salvation Army has an extensive recycling program. Unusable coats are sold to ragging distributors. The money received for them is used to support The Salvation Army’s alcohol and substance abuse rehabilitation programs, as is other revenue generated through thrift store sales.

How are the coats distributed?

The Salvation Army serves over a million people each year in the Chicagoland area, including families, children and individuals. Many of those families receive assistance through the 28 corps community centers, as well as residential facilities, located throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

Many of those served through the need-based social service and assistance programs also receive coat vouchers. In addition to those, any family or individual in need can apply for a coat voucher at any of our corps community center locations.

Then, they can take that coat voucher to any Salvation Army Thrift Store in the list below to pick out a free coat. This distribution system allows people in need of coats to shop with the coats with dignity and select a coat that is the right size, style and weight for them.
