Mail Carrier Shot to Death in East Garfield Park

A U.S. Postal Service employee was found shot to death inside a vehicle Tuesday morning in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 2800 block of West Warren about 6:35 a.m. found a 27-year-old man inside a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The victim was identified as Anthony Hayes, a U.S. Postal Service employee. He was a letter carrier who worked out of the post office at 5001 W. Division, USPS spokesman Mark Reynolds said.

“The Postal Service is deeply saddened by the tragic killing of our co-worker Anthony Hayes,” a statement from the postal service said “Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony’s family, co-workers and friends.”

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but did not release additional details Tuesday morning.
