MLB Preview and Predictions: National League East

All this week, we'll be taking a look at each of Major League Baseball's six divisions and making our picks on which teams will be competing for a World Series title when October rolls around.

Today, we get things started with the National League East.

1 New York Mets

Last year, Chicago Cubs fans saw exactly what a dominant rotation can do as the Mets swept the North Siders out of the National League Championship Series.

Behind Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, and Jacob deGrom, the Mets are looking to prove that last season wasn’t a fluke, and we have them winning in a tough battle with Washington. A healthy David Wright, a returning Yoenis Cespedes, and a well balanced lineup that added Neil Walker should give the Mets enough juice to win this division.

2 Washington Nationals (wild card)

With new manager Dusty Baker at the helm, the Nationals are looking to prove that their 2015 failures are in the past. Largely regarded as a World Series favorite before the season began, the Nationals faltered badly despite a remarkable season from Bryce Harper, and an offseason of changes and tweaks was needed.

Grabbing Daniel Murphy from the Mets does weaken their rival’s lineup a bit, and having a core that includes Harper, Jayson Werth, and Ryan Zimmerman does give the Nationals a very strong group. The big question, as always, will be about the health of their rotation, with Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez looking to combine with Max Scherzer on a top-three that could rival New York’s.

3 Miami Marlins

Any lineup that features Giancarlo Stanton will be considered at least serviceable, and the Marlins do have a few other players that can make noise, including Christian Yelich and Dee Gordon, who had an excellent 2015 campaign on South Beach.

Having Jose Fernandez in the mix helps bolster the team’s rotation, but all eyes will be on new acquisition Wei-Yin Chen this season. If he can make a seamless transition to the big leagues, then the Marlins’ rotation takes a big step forward and they could be a thorn in the side of the Mets and Nationals.

4 Philadelphia Phillies

It only feels like the Phillies have been in a rebuild since they made consecutive World Series appearances in 2008 and 2009, but this season could be another rough one in the city of Brotherly Love.

No one in the starting lineup really jumps out for the team, but a couple of new additions could help their pitching staff perform better, as Jeremy Hellickson joins the rotation and Andrew Bailey and David Hernandez arrive to help the bullpen out.

5 Atlanta Braves

The Braves traded away Andrelton Simmons and Shelby Miller this offseason, but they did make some interesting additions, as Ender Inciarte will look to help anchor the top of the lineup and Erick Aybar will attempt to replace Simmons at shortstop.

The health of players like Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis will be critical if the Braves have any shot of finishing in the top-tier of the division, but with a young team and some crucial holes that still need to be filled, it may not be the most pleasant summer at Turner Field.
