MK Restaurant Hosts a Student-Run Lunch

Students from CSW Academy created their own menu for the lunch

The kitchen at MK restaurant experienced an unfamiliar sight Monday when students from CSW Academy took over during lunch hours.

Executive Chef Erick Williams invited students from the culinary arts high school in the Lawndale community to cook lunch for students from the Englewood neighborhood.

Williams, a Lawndale native, showed the young chefs the ins and outs of the kitchen, orchestrated meal prep and guided them through the entire lunch. He says his passion of mentoring students comes from his hope of passing on his knowledge.

"Being able to think on your feet, being able to produce under pressure, and being able to follow instructions under pressure,” Williams said.

The pressure was certainly on for these students as they cooked for people their own age for the first time. Additionally, the menu for the lunch featured the students’ own ideas.

"He asked us about our idea, the menu for today," said Shacoyia Coger, a student at CSW Academy.
