A middle school in Island Lake was locked down for about three hours Monday after police said a student brought a loaded gun into the building.

No one was injured during the incident at Matthews Middle School, police said. The gun was confiscated and the student was taken into custody.

"The student both told a student or other students as well as may have shown [the weapon]," said Wauconda CUSD 118 Supt. Dan Coles.

The entire school was searched during the lockdown with nothing further being found, he said.

Parents expressed comfort that the student was in custody and credited other students for coming forward.

"I would like to thank those children because they may have saved how many lives today," said parent Jaunine Moore.

School officials posted a statement on the district's website.
