Kris Bryant Breaks Cubs Record in Game 1 Win

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has only played in 14 career postseason games, but on Saturday night he did something that no other Cubs player has ever done.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Bryant lofted a double off the left field wall after Miguel Montero and Dexter Fowler hit back-to-back home runs. With the double, Bryant picked up his eighth career extra-base hit in postseason play, breaking a Cubs record that had previously been shared with three other players.

Frank “Wildfire” Schulte, who played on the Cubs’ World Series championship teams in 1907 and 1908, originally had set the record, and later it was tied by Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg and long-time Cubs standout third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

In his career, Bryant has a .259 batting average with three home runs and nine RBI in postseason play. Even with those impressive numbers this early in his career, Bryant still has a little bit of work to do to set the team’s all-time record for postseason home runs. That mark belongs to Kyle Schwarber, who hit five long balls during the Cubs’ 2015 postseason run.
