Joe Caputo & Sons Closing Elk Grove Village Store Sunday: Report

The Elk Grove Village location will shut down amid a federal lawsuit accusing the family-owned business of not paying $3.6 million in produce

A Joe Caputo & Sons grocery store located in the northwest suburbs will close its doors permanently Sunday after opening three months ago, according to a report.

The Elk Grove Village location will shut down amid a federal lawsuit accusing the family-owned business of not paying $3.6 million in produce, according to the Daily Herald. Chicago-based wholesaler Anthony Marano Co. filed the suit. Two stores, located in Arlington Heights and Northbrook, have since closed.

On Thursday, a U.S. District Judge granted a temporary restraining order giving Marano Co. the power to shut down the northwest suburban store and liquidate its assets, the Daily Herald reported. The order also gives Caputo seven business day to pay Marano Co.

The suit claims that the grocery store owners haven’t been able to pay Marano Co. because of “cash flow problems,” according to the Daily Herald. Store managers were not immediately available for comment.

The grocer sent a letter to Joe Caputo & Sons customers which read in part "The expansion of our locations in Northbrook, Arlington Heights, and Elk Grove Village and subsequent closings, left a large and unexpected financial burden on our core operations. We have been attempting to address these issues ever since."

"While this process moves forward, we want to assure you, our valued customers, that Joe Caputo & Sons will continue to offer the very best values in produce, deli, and specialty items available anywhere, in the very same way we have since opening our doors in 1989," the letter went on the read. "Thanks to you, our original locations in Des Plaines, Algonquin, and Palatine remain strong and committed to a continued effort to meet and exceed our shoppers' expectations."

Joe Caputo & Sons and Angelo Caputo's Fresh Markets are separate stores, although the owners are from the same family, the Daily Herald reported.
