Jason Heyward Will Not Be Put on Disabled List: Report

The outfielder chased a shot over his head in the first inning Friday night, crashing into the wall on a diving catch

It looks like the Cubs got very lucky.

Outfielder Jason Heyward left Friday night's game against the Giants in the bottom of the first inning after crashing into the wall on a diving catch.

The Cubs said Heyward was under evaluation for an injury to his right torso abdominal region, and received an MRI Saturday afternoon.

His MRI showed contusion, according Chicago Sun-Times Cubs reporter Gordon Wittenmyer, and Heyward will not be added to the disabled list. His recovery timeline will be around 3 to 5 days.

"The first hitter of the game, something like that, I'm at a loss for words," Arrieta said of Heyward's catch in the deepest part of the stadium.

"That's an amazing catch. What he's capable with the glove in the outfield, it's amazing. I think he'll be just fine. A little sore, but I hope he's back as soon as possible."

"That might have been the game right there," manager Joe Maddon said. "He threw caution to the wind. That could have been an inside the park home run and they have a different mentality."

Outfielder Matt Szczur, who was on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring, was activated and available Saturday, according to a release from the team.

Right-handed pitcher Neil Ramirez was also designated for assignment.
