Jake Arrieta Named as Finalist for Gold Glove Award

Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta is a strong candidate for the National League Cy Young Award after an impressive 2015 season, but on Thursday the team’s ace was named as a finalist for another prestigious award.

That award is the NL Gold Glove Award, given to the best defensive player at each position on the diamond. Arrieta is one of the three finalists in the pitching category, joining Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole and Los Angeles’ Zack Greinke.

Arrieta had a solid season in the field for the Cubs, setting career highs in putouts, assists and double plays. He racked up an impressive .953 fielding percentage, making just four errors in 86 chances this season.

If Arrieta can capture the award, he will become the first Cubs player to win it since Derrek Lee took home first base honors in 2007. Pitcher Greg Maddux won three consecutive Gold Glove Awards for the Cubs from 2004 to 2006, making him the last hurler to win one for the North Siders.
