Indiana Zoo Searches for New Home for Wallabies After Baby Boom

Columbian Park Zoo in northwest Indiana experienced a baby boom in their wallaby population

A northwestern Indiana zoo that's experiencing a wallaby baby boom is looking for new homes for four of the small, kangaroo-like animals.

The Journal & Courier reports that interim Columbian Park Zoo director Dana Rhodes received permission last week from Lafayette's parks board to place four of the zoo's wallabies elsewhere. The Colombian Park Zoo currently has 14 wallabies, but that's four above its ideal limit.

Rhodes is searching for a zoo that's certified by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. But she says it might not take too much work to find the wallabies a new home.

The zoo's young wallabies are in high demand because their parents are Bennett's wallabies that were caught in the wild in New Zealand. Rhodes says they have "great genetics."
