Indiana Man Dies in Fireworks Accident

Police said an Indiana man was struck in the face while lighting fireworks

An Indiana man was killed Wednesday night after being injured in an accident involving fireworks, police said.

The 26-year-old man was found lying in the yard around 8:50 p.m. in the 17300 block of Jansen Court. in Lowell, Ind.

Police chief John Shelhart told NBCChicago the man apparently was setting off fireworks using a PVC pipe as a mortar tube and when he dropped one down the tube, it went off immediately.

Shelhart said there may have been a smoldering ember inside the tube, and the man, whose identity has not been released, was struck in the face.

"It sounds like a terrible, terrible accident," Shelhart said.

The man was rushed to St. Anthony Hospital for treatment and was then airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Shelhart said there were other family members present when the accident occurred. Police continue to investigate.
