Illinois State Trooper Struck by Vehicle During Traffic Stop

The vehicle involved in the accident flipped over while attempting to flee the scene

An Illinois State Trooper was critically injured after he was struck by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 294 Saturday afternoon.

A 28-year-old District 15 Trooper was struck just before 3 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-294 near St. Charles Road, officials said.

ISP spokesperson Monique Bond said the officer was taken to an area hospital in critical condition but his injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.

The vehicle involved in the accident, a maroon Honda, attempted to flee the scene when it crashed into a silver Acura, causing the Acura to flip over.

The driver of the Honda, a 55-year-old woman from Park Ridge, was taken into custody after the crash, police said. Preliminary information indicates the woman was driving under the influence, Bond said.

The driver and six passengers in the Acura, all family members from Naperville, were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Bond said a 37-year-old woman, a 43-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy, a 73-year-old woman, an 83-year-old man, an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were injured.

Police said an investigation into the crash was ongoing and charges were pending.
