Illinois Ranks Second for Highest Real Estate Taxes: Report

Buyers beware: Living in the Land of Lincoln could cost you a few Benjamins.

WalletHub released a new report on the states with the highest and lowest property taxes in 2015. Illinois ranked second highest with the average real estate tax of $3,939. New Jersey has the highest property tax at $3,971, just $32 more than Illinois’.

If you’re looking to save (and get some sun) Hawaii has the lowest property tax, according to WalletHub. Hawaii’s average tax for real estate owners totals to $482. In comparison, the average American household spends $2,089 on real estate taxes.

Residents in 27 states pay on average $423 on vehicle property taxes. Indiana’s car tax dips well below the median, at $300 according to WalletHub’s survey.
