Illinois No. 4 in Nation for Worst Highway Congestion

This should come as no surprise for Illinois commuters.

Expressways in the state have the fourth-worst rush-hour congestion in the nation, according to data released Thursday by the Reason Foundation.

Illinois was one of eight states to report congestion on more than half of highways during peak travel hours, joining Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, California, Nevada, Georgia and Indiana.

Congestion was determined by 2011 data from the Texas Transportation Institute’s Urban Mobility Report, which estimates freeway lane-miles with drivers traveling at speeds less than 85 percent of free-flow speeds.

Florida was the worst in terms of traffic, reporting more than 60 percent of roadways congested during rush hour—64.50 percent to be exact.

Illinois reported 55.25 percent of urban interstates were congested during the rush-hour commuter frenzy.

There is some good news when it comes to Illinois interstates.

The state apparently spends more than most on its roads and has very few highways in poor condition.
