Illinois Man Killed In Texas Fertilizer Plant Explosion

Illinois funeral planned for Plainfield man killed in blast

An Illinois man was among the first responders killed in a massive fertilizer plant explosion last week in Texas, authorities revealed.

Search and rescue member Kevin Sanders from south suburban Plainfield was working as an emergency medical technician in the small town of West and a member of a nearby volunteer fire department when the explosion occurred last Wednesday at West Fertilizer Co.

A combined memorial service will be held Thursday in Waco for all first responders killed in the tragic explosion. Funeral services for Sanders have not yet been planned.

Police barricades remained up Monday and officials continued blocking access to homes near the plant that caught fire and exploded last week, injuring hundreds and killing at least 14.

Authorities over the weekend said they still don't know what caused the blast at West Fertilizer Co. and noted the final report on the tragedy may take months.

Correction: A previous version of this post incorrectly reported that Sanders' funeral services had been scheduled for Sunday.
