Illinois Counties Struggle With Tornado Clean Up

Gov. Pat Quinn has declared Kankakee County a state disaster area following storms and tornadoes that tore through central Illinois last week.

That makes the total number of counties with that designation five. The others, LaSalle, Livingston, Peoria and Putnam are struggling to clean up after a devastating series of storms tore through middle Illinois last weekend.

Also Thursday, state officials asked the Federal Emergency Management to conduct damage assessments in all five counties. After the feds determine how much of the damage is uninsured, they will decide how much money to send to help.

Weather officials have confirmed 15 tornadoes touched down in Illinois last Saturday, destroying and damaging dozens of homes and businesses. Dozens of people were injured.

Quinn toured Dwight earlier this week. The community was one of the hardest hit.
